Title
Woman Ceramicist at work in her studio
Artist
Martin Davey
Medium
Painting - Oil On Mounting Board
Description
In this portrait painting a ceramicist can be seen hard at work in her studio. A clay bust of a stylized character is having final touches applied. The subject is shown surrounded by many of her tools of the trade, and some more unusual items that are hanging around the workspace, for instance the animal vertebrae section in the left hand corner - all things which add visual interest and emphasise the sitters personality and working methods. Many well used dirty jars, with still shiny lids, dominate the foreground. The light in the scene comes partly from the window and is also generated by the halogen desk lamp. The sitters red hair is a very distinctive element of her, and has been used to good advantage.
The Southampton (UK) based artist pictured is known as Leo Deville, who says “I create ceramic stylized faces, figures, sculptures and jewellery that can include coloured wires, textiles, beads & paint.” She also paints in acrylics and oils. Her website can be found easily online.
Created in late May 2019, this oil painting is painted on acid free mounting board, sized at 33x 23.5”. It is based on a posed photograph shot at her studio one morning.
