Description
This painting was completed in late 2021. It shows a scene set at Southampton central station, in the county of Hampshire, UK. Dated during the mid 1950's the station is depicted at the western end of the four platforms, looking towards Millbrook station. The line would terminate at Weymouth in western Dorset. The left hand side shows some of the many cranes in use at the time in connection with the Western docks. One local passenger train is taking on water before departing, possibly for the local branch line to Fawley. This steam engine is a Victorian built '02' 0-4-4T Adams tank engine. The large and impressive signal gantry holding a good number of semaphore signals has been photographed many times over the years as it stood on the site, and framed many locomotives running or waiting under it. It was taken out of use in 1981 and is now part of the national collection at York railway museum.
Based on a B/W photo taken by John Bailey taken back at some period in the 1950s. The photo lacked detail so the scene had to be researched form various other pictures taken at the time from different angles to enable the final drawing to be created. This then makes painting it easier if one knows what exactly is being painted.
The transport painting is painted in oils on mounting board, sized at 33” x 23” approx.
