Medium
Painting - Oil On Linen
Description
This oil painting shows a conceptual scene that celebrates the voyage of the mayflower on its journey to the new world in 1620, but with a futuristic twist.
Although the subjects within the artwork suggest a scene set in the early 17th century, it notes the ideas that mankind may eventually emigrate to worlds (exoplanets) outside of our own solar system, a very modern concept, but shown from a 1620 view point. The spirit of a long journey is shown with two ships departing for destinations unknown. A typical passenger, a woman with baby is suggested as a passenger, and the population of a future world.
The lower half of the painting takes its inspiration from typical religious paintings of the period. The landscape was based on the way that the subject was handled in those paintings with a high viewpoint looking down on the land and sea. The figure is then place against the scene but not as part of it, but almost detached from it. The women is looking up towards the heavens and sees another ship departing on a journey across the sea of space and time, and has a multitude of sails at different angles for its unusual trip. We can see in the painting that it has travelled from our solar system (with only 7 planets showing as known in 1620) to an unknown destination, with another 'blue' planet orbiting a different sun, the 'flame' from the ship illustrating where the interstellar ship has departed from (Earth).
This painting started life as a digital concept back in early March 2020 with the intention to then re-create it as a traditional oil painting. Painting on canvas (sized at 36” x 24”) was started during the time the world had entered lock down, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and completed during mid summer. It was designed to be exhibited at the South City galleries open exhibition of 2020 'In search of a new world' but unfortunately the exhibition was cancelled in its intended state but converted to an online one.
