This painting shows a scene at Eling, a waterside area beside the town of Totton, near to the City of Southampton in Hampshire, UK. The area, once a busy industrial location situated by the riverside, is now becoming a heritage/ nature reserve. The river is the known as the River Barley, which it turn runs off the River Test. Many boats and yachts can be seen moored in the location and is a popular spot in the summer for fishing and catching crabs. The river is tidal so in this view it can be seen many vessels are resting on the mud. One very distinctive feature of the location are the stacks of sea containers, retired from use by the nearby port of Southampton's various shipping companies. It is understood that these will in the future be removed as part of the regeneration of the area.
The painting itself was created during September 2017, and is painted in oils on mounting board, sized at 20” x 28” approx.

I don't like containers, but the highly detailed ships and the muddy ground looks perfect to me.

Thank you very much Meg. It was an interesting experience dealing with some of the ugly objects withing the composition and making them work in the painting.
