Painted digitally in January 2021, this illustration is a spoof of a famous painting created back in 1871. It was painted by James Abbott McNeill Whistler and featured his mother as the subject, sitting in a chair. The original has a flattened composition, similar to Asian art suggesting basic forms. It was originally called “Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 1: Portrait of the Artist’s Mother” although a more common title is “Whistler’s Mother”. The work was criticised for its use of greys and stark composition at the time. This was the first painting purchased for France’s national collection created by an American artist.
My version replaces the human mother with a dinosaur, based on early Thyreophorans. four legged and with armour on their backs, the Stegosaurus being a famous member of the order. The whole painting has been copied by roughly looking at the colour palette and brush-marks. It was done using 'Sketchbook Pro' with some Photoshop touches at the end....
