Description
This painting was completed during July 2021. It shows a sunny September scene in London on the 'South Bank' as it is known with the 'Embankment' on the other side of the world famous river, the Thames. A couple of tourists are enjoying the sights of the city, framing their photo to include the Houses of Parliament off to the left of the composition. A man is resting in the sunlight against one of the famous Victorian 'Dolphin lamps' to be found on both sides of the Thames. The scene is dominated by Charing cross railway station, which during the late 1980s had a large complex of shops and offices built on top of it, known as Embankment Place, with the distinctive building having angled 'towers' and a large area of glass. The station is linked by railway lines running over the famous 'Hungerford bridge', built in the 1870s, replacing an earlier one built by I.K.Brunel. Pedestrian walkways were added later each side and is one of a few bridges in London which carry people and trains. In the early part of the 21st century the walkways were replaced with ones that were wider and used a suspension system, as shown, and named the 'Golden Jubilee Bridges'.
Painted in oils, this London landscape artwork measures 20” x 16”.
